FOREWORD ON DUBRE BOOK

FOREWORD

The history of NUPENG and indeed labour unionism in Nigeria will not be complete without a mention of Comrade John Enas Dubre. My meeting Comrade Dubre in the last quarter of 1973 was during my resumption at Nigerian Agip Oil Co. Ltd. (NAOC) in September of that year as a newly engaged staff, where he (Dubre) was already working. We were both at the Awolowo Road, Ikoyi annex of NAOC offices, with Head Office then at UBA Building, Broad Street, Lagos.

I joined NAOC Branch of what is now known as National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the election as the Branch Secretary in 1974, brought me closer to Mr. Dubre who was the Branch Chairman.

John Enas Dubre is, no doubt, a born negotiator par-excellence with a never-say-die spirit. He does not see anything impossible or difficult to achieve, believing that one just need to work hard. He is calm, soft-spoken, courageous and diligent. He is a man gifted with dogged determination, patience, perseverance and tact.

His escapades in the founding and nurturing of NUPENG into a strong workers union at the Branches and National level of the Oil and Gas Industry, earned him the sobriquet – “Chairman Mao’, especially within the NAOC family.

John Enas Dubre is a consunmmate, dependable and forthright union leader, whose exploits within the Oil & Gas Industry, for and on behalf of the worker remain substantially legendary.

What’s more, the octogenarian is neither tired nor done with unionism. Perhaps therein lies his strength and one unique thing that gives him plenty of joy and peace of mind. This is because he is still strategizing and mobilizing to ensure that the citizens (pensioners) get the best treatment in their old age as former worker of the “privileged” Oil and Gas Industry.

It is gratifying to wish comrade John Enas Dubre the best of health and peace of mind for the remaining years of his life even as he writes his Autobiography and launch for humanity and posterity.

Comrade Otunba Fola Akodu
