Students frown at double charges for portal maintenance, From Emmanuel Iheanacho, Umuahia

Students of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, in Abia State

Students of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, in Abia State have frowned at the unethical and fraudulent means of extorting from them in the University by one Mr. Theophilus Nweke in the name of portal maintenance charge.

A Student identified only as David alleged that Nweke who is the managing director of Citinet Technology Innovation Ltd, the company in charge of the University portal, is currently double charging students in the University for the Portal Maintenance.

He explained that apart from the sum of N 5,000 bundled with students school fees for the portal maintenance every session, students also pay another N5, 000 as ICT fees per session, while each student is charge  N500 for any service provided for him/her at the University ICT centre.

He alleged that all effort made by some concerned students to get the University management to call Nweke to order have proved abortive, adding that Nweke had boasted that he was untouchable.

However investigation by our correspondent at the University Micro finance bank where students pay their fees revealed that Nweke directly sweeps the sum of  N 5,000 billed into the students school fees as portal maintenance to his Citinet Technology Innovation Ltd company account with an old generation commercial bank.

A highly placed source close to the Micro finance bank who pleaded anonymity stated that so far the sum of 272 million and another N69 million have been diverted to two accounts belonging to Nweke’s company without recourse to the Federal Government single Treasury Policy.

The Source said, “The federal government and the Anti Money Laundering Agencies have to come in without wasting time to investigate this act of extortion and stealing of public funds.

“This double charge and deliberate act of inflicting of poor parents with financial hardship at this period of economic recession is unwholesome and wicked.  This act must stop immediately and proper investigation and probe set up to unravel and expose those behind these unlawful and fraudulent practices.

The source maintained that the University management is not totally unaware of the fraud being committed by Nweke.

The source added that the University authorities and Nweke needs to explain to the whole world the right and moral they have to commit the fraudulent act.

“They need to explain the basis and condition the managing director of Citinet Technology Innovation Ltd, is diverting funds directly to his company account without passing through the TSA. This illegal act must stop immediately and the already diverted amount of N272 million and 69 million must be refunded immediately” the source insisted.

Efforts made to get Nweke to respond to the allegation proved abortive as he had yet pick his call nor to reply to text sent to his Mobile.

But one Mr. Echika Ezuka who said he is a lawyer to Nweke said he will only respond if the question is sent to him as a mail, but he had yet to respond to a mail sent to him on Friday as at the time of filing this report.
