HEALING UZERE: STANDING SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH HOST COMMUNITY IN TIMES OF ADVERSITY

For generations, the resilient people of Uzere Kingdom have been the guardians of a proud,
historic oil heritage. When an unexpected technical incident occurred at Well 14, Heritage
Energy Operational Services Limited (HEOSL) didn’t just see an operational challenge—the
company saw its neighbours, its partners, and its families facing an unsettling moment. From
the very first hours, its priority has not been corporate damage control, but the safety, health,
and heartbeat of the Uzere community.
When the reservoir buildup occurred, HEOSL teams felt the urgency deeply. They immediately
flew in world-class well-control experts and deployed a continuous fleet of up to 35 tankers a
day, working around the clock to contain the fluids and shield the surrounding environment
from further harm. This wasn't just a technical evacuation; it was a race against time to protect
the soil, the streams, and the backyard gardens that sustain ordinary Uzere families.
A community's peace of mind is rooted in the safety of the air they breathe and the water they
use. In response to concerns regarding gas bubbling, HEOSL environmental and technical teams
have been on the ground daily, tracking methane and hydrocarbon emissions to guarantee the
air remains safe for everyone. The company has walked the affected farmlands side-by-side
with local leaders and regulators during Joint Investigation Visits, ensuring that the
community's voice is the loudest voice in guiding our response.
“When the incident happened, there was understandable anxiety across the quarters,” noted a
senior community representative who participated in the joint inspections. “But seeing the
Heritage team on the ground alongside the regulators, working through the night to evacuate
the fluids and monitor the air, showed us that they are listening. They aren't running away from
the problem; they are facing it with us.”
Understanding that immediate comfort was needed while long-term solutions are put in place,
HEOSL rushed over ₦10 million in essential foodstuffs and relief materials to vulnerable homes.
The swift collaboration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the state medical teams, working
hand-in-hand with HEOSL personnel to monitor public health and ensure every resident feels
supported, cared for, and heard further strengthened the remediation efforts.
“The relief materials and the medical deployment ordered by the Governor have given our
people some breathing room,” a local Uweye Quarter youth leader shared. “What matters most
to us now is that Heritage is looking at the bigger picture. Their commitment to clean up the
cassava farms, decontaminate our waters, and audit the older facilities gives us confidence that
our children will still have a land to inherit.”
To the fishermen, the farmers, and the mothers and fathers of Uzere, HEOSL made a promise to
continue to stand with them. Heritage Energy is said to be profoundly committed to the healing
and full restoration of farmlands and waterways. Heritage is actively reviewing its equipment
and local assets to ensure the land remains safe for the next generation. Uzere has given much
to Nigeria's history, and Heritage Energy is dedicated to ensuring its future is defined by clean
air, fertile soil, and a thriving community.
